Arr! Is that the weathered Pequod coasting into harbor?

So, what's next? Is anyone interested in turning this into a real book club? Here are my votes. Tell me what you want.
  • Henry V (for Shakespeare in the Park)
  • LotR Trilogy
  • The Hobbit
  • One of those Jane Austen books or other 'classics'

I'll play. It's hard not to choose Tolkien, but I could go for any of the options.

I have no problem not chosing Tolkien, and while I totally want to go see Henry V as an outing, I don't love reading plays. Plus, I've read it before, and I always end up cheating. I would vote for another classic. Not so sure about Jane Austen, though...It's kinda girly and stuck in a certain context...(because you know, a whaling books is about all contexts...) What about something by Steinbeck or Hemingway?

I'd prefer Steinbeck over Hemingway, I believe.

Eh. I'm not a Steinbeck fan. I wouldn't mind a Kerouac or Hunter S. Thompson, though.

What about a Dickens or Dumas tale of yore?

Hmmm . . . How about we each independently come up with a list of 10 titles that we haven't read (recently, at least) but want to, then see if there is anything in common. If not, we can take turns selecting (and Erica's already had her first turn).

Scott, if you ever want to talk about Kerouac or the good doctor just let me know. Hunter has been my idol for the past 15 years.

How about a cool story about a "dentist" who gets married, goes nuts, and totally goes off the deep end? I heartily recommend McTeague (http://tinyurl.com/mqho3) because it will make you feel like you are reading all historic-like, yet it's all very lurid and sensational like the Weekly World News. Plus, it's about San Francisco.
